Punjabi truck driver charged over alleged drugs smuggling across Canada-US border
Gill was subsequently arrested by the RCMP’s Drugs and Organised Crime Group 6 under Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
PTC News Desk: A 47-year-old truck driver of Indian origin from Punjab has been charged in Canada for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine and heroin across the Canada-US border in October last year.
The accused, Khushwinder Singh Gill, is alleged to have carried 52 brick-shaped packages of suspected drugs inside two duffel bags while driving a commercial truck.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) intercepted the suspected drugs on October 22, 2025, at the Abbotsford-Huntingdon border crossing in British Columbia. The packages were found during a search of the truck and its trailer.
Gill was subsequently arrested by the RCMP’s Drugs and Organised Crime Group 6 under Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Following an investigation, charges against him were approved by the British Columbia Provincial Court on October 19, 2026. He faces four charges: importing cocaine, possessing cocaine for trafficking, importing heroin and possessing heroin for trafficking.
Staff-Sergeant Eric Kimura of the RCMP’s Federal Policing Pacific Region Drugs and Organised Crime Unit said the investigation highlighted the importance of cooperation between the RCMP and the CBSA in preventing drugs from entering Canada through land borders.
Earlier this month, the CBSA reported that its officers had seized nearly 128 kg of cocaine from a truck entering Windsor, Canada, from the United States via the Ambassador Bridge.
