Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, brother of UAE PM, dies at 76; Dubai announces 10-day official mourning

Dubai: Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, died on Monday morning, according to an announcement by the Ruler’s Court. Following his death, Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning across the emirate. The mourning period began on Monday, with flags to be flown at half-mast during the period.

UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum paid tribute to his brother in a message shared on X.

In his message, Sheikh Mohammed expressed his grief and prayed for mercy for Sheikh Ahmed. He also offered prayers for his brother’s place in Paradise and for strength and patience for his family and loved ones.

“Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him shall we return,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote in his tribute.

Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also mourned the death of his uncle. He shared a prayer seeking mercy and forgiveness for the deceased and asking for his resting place to be honoured.

The announcement has led to an official period of mourning across Dubai, with government and public institutions observing the prescribed arrangements.

Sheikh Ahmed was a member of Dubai’s ruling Al Maktoum family. Further details about the funeral and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the authorities.
