PTC Web Desk: US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a new proposal aimed at strengthening American involvement in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes. He said the United States would take responsibility for safeguarding the strategic waterway and seek a 20% reimbursement on all cargo passing through it to cover security costs.

The announcement came shortly after Trump said in an interview with Fox News that the US intended to "take control" of the Strait of Hormuz and act as its protector. He later expanded on the proposal in a post on Truth Social, where he said the move was necessary to ensure uninterrupted navigation despite ongoing tensions with Iran.

According to Trump, the United States would restore what he described as an "Iranian blockade." He claimed the measure would only restrict Iranian ships and vessels linked to Iran, while allowing all other countries to continue using the shipping route without disruption.

Trump also said the US would assume the role of the "Guardian of the Hormuz Strait." He argued that nations benefiting from the safe passage of goods through the corridor should contribute toward the cost of maintaining security in the region. He added that work on implementing the proposal would begin immediately.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is considered one of the world's busiest energy shipping routes. Around one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass through the narrow channel, making its stability vital for international trade and global energy supplies.

Trump's announcement comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following recent military exchanges in the Gulf region. Any changes affecting the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz are closely watched by global markets because of their potential impact on oil prices and international commerce.
