US: Ahead of Janmashtami celebrations, BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Indiana defaced in 4th attack within a year
This incident follows several similar attacks, including the March desecration of the BAPS Hindu temple in California
PTC Web Desk: A Hindu temple in Greenwood, Indiana, has been defaced in what is being described as a hate-motivated act, marking the fourth such incident targeting a BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in the United States within the past year. The vandalism took place on August 10, just days ahead of Krishna Janmashtami celebrations.
According to the temple’s Public Affairs division, the main signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple was desecrated, an act the organisation labelled as a “hate crime.” In a statement, it said the incident has only strengthened the community’s unity and determination to oppose anti-religious behaviour.
The Indian Consulate in Chicago strongly denounced the act, calling it “reprehensible,” and confirmed it has taken up the matter with local law enforcement authorities to ensure swift action. “Desecration of the main signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood, Indiana, is reprehensible,” the consulate wrote in a post on X. It also urged heightened vigilance in the temple area.
The Consul General addressed devotees and local leaders, including Greenwood’s mayor, urging solidarity and caution against troublemakers. US Congressman Nick LaLota also voiced condemnation, stating that religiously motivated crimes must be confronted and perpetrators held accountable.
This incident follows several similar attacks, including the March desecration of the BAPS Hindu temple in California, which was also widely condemned by Indian authorities.
The Greenwood temple administration has assured that the community will remain united in the face of such acts of intolerance, reaffirming its stand against anti-Hindu hate crimes.
