Who is Angad Singh Dhillon? Ludhiana-based diplomat appointed Canadas ambassador to UAE
As ambassador to the UAE, Dhillon will represent Canada in a country that is an important partner in areas such as trade, investment and diplomacy.
PTC News Desk: The Canadian government has appointed Angad Singh Dhillon as its next Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The appointment was announced on September 25 by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand.
Dhillon will replace Radha Krishna Panday as Canada’s top diplomat in the UAE. The appointment was part of a wider diplomatic reshuffle that also included the appointment of Carmen Sorger as Canada’s ambassador to Cuba.
Dhillon has family roots in Ghungrana village in Punjab. He most recently served as Director of Operations and Stakeholder Relations in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office.
According to the Canadian government, Dhillon was among Carney’s advisers who worked on strengthening Canada’s diplomatic ties with important partners, including India and China. He also helped improve high-level communication and cooperation with these countries.
Dhillon also worked on efforts to attract investment to Canada, including planning the country’s first national Investment Summit.
Earlier, he served as Chief of Staff to two federal Cabinet ministers handling the small business and transport portfolios. During these roles, he was involved in Canada’s participation in major international forums, including the G7, G20, United Nations General Assembly, APEC and the International Transport Forum.
His appointment is expected to draw attention among the Punjabi diaspora because of his family connection to Punjab.
As ambassador to the UAE, Dhillon will represent Canada in a country that is an important partner in areas such as trade, investment and diplomacy.
The appointment comes as Canada and the UAE work to strengthen their economic ties. On September 21, Anita Anand and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed growing bilateral cooperation, including negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and opportunities to increase trade and investment.
