Mumbai, January 20: Maharashtra will reopen schools for classes 1 to 12 from January 24 in compliance with Covid-19 protocols, state School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said on Thursday. As per the latest coronavirus update, new cases of Omicron variant have dipped sharply in the state, even though it had the highest tally of infections nationwide. In the last 24 hours, India hit a fresh eight-month high with 3,17,532 new infections while daily deaths rose by 491, close to this month's peak. The figure included 85 from a previous wave in the southern state of Kerala. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has agreed to our proposal," said Varsha Gaikwad. The Maharashtra School Education Department has also decided to open pre-primary schools from January 24. Earlier in the month, the Maharashtra Government announced the closure of schools amid rising Covid-19 cases. The city also reported India's highest total of new infections at 43,697.

Meanwhile, amid Omicron concerns, Delhi has also shut schools, private offices, restaurants and has imposed weekend curfew.
