PTC News Desk: In a concerning trend, heart attacks, which were previously thought to affect only the elderly, have become equally common among younger people in recent years.

Indeed, heart disease is a major cause of death worldwide, and its prevalence has recently increased in India.

Leading health experts have attributed the rise in cardiac arrests and related issues to fast-paced modern life and subtle changes in habits that reflect changing times.

Dr Naresh Trehan, a world-renowned cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon, stated that stress from daily life and pollution are taking a toll on people and contributing to a significant increase in cardiac events, particularly among younger people.

"There are several reasons. We know that India is the epicentre of coronary artery disease. As part of our modern lifestyle, we struggle to avoid eating junk or fast food, as well as drinking beverages high in sodium. Such habits are a major contributor to cardiac arrests.”

Dr Trehan stated that several factors, including toxic air and high pollution levels in the national capital, contribute significantly to health risks.

"...So, when all of these factors are considered, we know that people who live in an environment with a low air quality index, such as Delhi, are more likely to develop high blood pressure and lung diseases."

"When such cases increase, heart-related ailments follow," he added.

"We need to understand that in this current environment, we are dealing with a variety of factors that are causing an increase in heart disease cases, particularly among the younger population. Several young people are succumbing to cardiac events. This is a source of concern for us," Dr. Trehan continued.
