PTC Web Desk: As severe heatwave continues to engulf North India, five people died in Delhi in the past 72 hours and at least 14 people died in Noida due to heatstroke.

According to Renu Agarwal of Noida's district hospital, the exact cause of death will not be known until post-mortem reports are completed.

The deceased include a car mechanic who died of heat stroke on June 16. The mechanic was admitted to the hospital on June 15 with a 106-degree fever.

Another heat stroke victim was a 70-year-old Bihar man who had missed his train and was wandering around the station.

Over seven people have been admitted to LNJP hospital with symptoms of high fever ranging from 106 to 107 degrees. Five of them are on a ventilator, and three are over the age of 65.

The majority of these patients are suffering from electrolyte deficiency, heat stroke, fevers over 105 degrees, and severe dehydration.

The number of patients suffering from heat stroke is increasing on average in Delhi's private hospitals and small clinics.

Dr Gaurav Kumar, who runs a clinic in Paharganj, said the number of people affected by the heatwave has increased more than twice in the last month. He said the majority of those affected were rickshaw drivers or day labourers.

However, an ongoing western disturbance may provide some relief from the persistent heat in Delhi and surrounding areas over the next 24-48 hours.
