Another bridge collapse in Bihar sparks uproar
PTC Web Desk: Another bridge collapsed in Bihar, causing panic among people. On Saturday, a bridge over the Gandak Canal collapsed in Siwan, Bihar.
The collapse made a loud noise that could be heard in nearby Ramgarh, Darbhanga district.
According to initial reports, there were no casualties in the incident. A video of the bridge's collapse has surfaced, highlighting the extent of the structural failure. The bridge, which connected the markets of Patedhi Bazar in Maharajganj district to Ramgarh Panchayat in Darbhanga, provided a vital link for thousands of commuters every day.
Residents have voiced outrage over the negligence that caused the collapse, noting that the bridge was nearly 40 years old and had not been properly maintained since its construction during the canal's development phase. The improper handling during the canal's construction caused erosion around the bridge pillars, eventually causing one to collapse.
The collapse has closed off access to the Gandak canal, forcing people to travel a distance to neighbouring villages.
The accident occurred just days after a similar incident in Araria, in which a concrete bridge over the Bakra River, built at a cost of crores, collapsed in seconds. Visuals showed the bridge over the fast-flowing river skewed on one side, with a crowd gathered on the banks near the bridge to capture the moment it fell. The bridge, built at Rs 12 crore, collapsed before its opening.
