Centre stays implementation of laptop, PC import curbs till Oct 31
PTC News Desk: The government has postponed its plan of curbing laptop and tablet imports, providing respite to electronic companies. Companies will have until October 31 to obtain a license to import the devices, according to a government notification.
"Import consignments can be cleared till October 31 without a licence and a government permit would be required for clearance of import from November 1," the government added.
A "liberal transitional arrangement is provided for import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers and servers ... till October 31, 2023," it added.
This is a partial reversal of a surprise decision to enforce the license requirement with immediate effect on Thursday, which sparked appeals for a delay.
According to the government, restrictions were set for security concerns as well as to promote domestic manufacturing. According to officials, the move will also reduce inbound shipments of these goods from countries such as China and Korea, as well as allow the Centre to keep a close eye on the places from which the products are coming.
"Import consignments can be cleared till October 31, 2023, without a licence for restricted imports," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said.
Liberal transitional arrangements have been announced for the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, servers etc till October 31, it further said.
However, the DGFT stated that a valid licence for restricted imports will be required "effective November 1."
