New Delhi, August 8: Gaurav Gogoi, a prominent Congress leader, asserted on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dual-engine government approach in Manipur had faltered. The Lok Sabha initiated a discussion on a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Modi's government, with Gogoi leading the debate.

Gogoi pointed out that the double-engine government in Manipur had proved ineffective, emphasizing the grim outcomes. He cited figures, including deaths, property damage, displacement, and registered FIRs, to support his argument. The opposition I.N.D.I.A. alliance, seeking justice for Manipur, brought forth the no-confidence motion.

The Congress leader criticized the Manipur Chief Minister for instigating actions that had heightened tensions instead of fostering an environment of dialogue and harmony. Gogoi stressed that the motion was aimed at delivering justice to Manipur rather than merely being a numerical showdown.

Gogoi also questioned Prime Minister Modi's silence on the Manipur situation, criticizing the delay in his response and the brevity of his remarks. The absence of action against the Manipur Chief Minister further fueled Gogoi's concerns.

The discussion on the no-confidence motion spanned 12 hours, with different time allocations for various parties. The BJP, as the ruling party, was given around seven hours, while other parties were granted proportionate slots based on their representation.

The debate on the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government is scheduled for August 8 and 9 in the Lok Sabha, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to respond on August 10. The turmoil in Manipur, stemming from ethnic conflicts between Meities and Kukis, prompted the high-stakes motion, demanding accountability and justice.
