DGCA imposes Rs 80L fine on Air India for flight norms violation

Air India fined: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposed a fine of Rs 80 lakhs on Air India Limited for violation of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) and fatigue management system (FMS) of flight crew. 

The fine was imposed after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation conducted spot audit on Air India Limited in January of this year to assess the operator's compliance with FDTL and FMS regulations.

The DGCA discovered violations during this audit of Air India. Subsequently, on March 1 and a show-cause notice was issued to Air India by the DGCA.

In an official statement, the regulator said, “Pursuant to the non-satisfactory response submitted by operator, a fine of ₹ 80, 00, 000 (rupees eighty lakhs) have been imposed on the operator."

The official statement of watchdog says, “The analysis of reports and evidence revealed that M/s Air India Limited operated flight(s) with both flight crew aged above 60 years flying together in few instances, which is a violation of Sub Rule (2) of Rule 28 A of the Aircraft Rules, 1937.”

DGCA further added that instances of surpassing duty periods, inaccurately recorded training records, and overlapping duties during the audit.

This fine on Air India marks the tenth fine issued by the DGCA the past year. The airline has incurred approximately Rs 4 crore in fines for various infractions, including a Rs 1.10 crore penalty for alleged safety violations on specific long-range critical routes.
