'FloodWatch': Centre launches app for real-time flood updates

'FloodWatch' launch: In response to an increase in flood-related incidents all over the country, including loss of life and property, the government launched an app on Thursday to provide real-time flood information in impacted areas.

According to Central Water Commission (CWC) Chairperson Kushvinder Vohra, the 'FloodWatch' app will collect data from 338 stations and share real-time flood updates across 23 states and Union Territories.

Vohra stated during the introduction of 'FloodWatch' that the app intends to use mobile phones to spread flood-related information and even provides forecasts for up to 7 days.

He went on to say that the app employs cutting-edge methods including satellite data analysis, mathematical simulation, and real-time monitoring to provide accurate and timely flood forecasts.

"The app's user-friendly interface will make it simple for anyone to stay informed and reduce risk during flood events," added Vohra.

The CWC chief stated that 'FloodWatch' will send out alert messages and flood forecasts in both texts and audio forms.

According to Vohra, the app presently gives updates in English and Hindi but will soon be expanded to additional regional languages.

However, the CWC's in-house created app has yet to connect with flood-hit Himachal Pradesh, and its services will be available in the state within six months, he noted.
