India weather update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said several parts of the country may face more heatwave days than usual in May. These include areas in the foothills of the Himalayas, parts of the east coast as well as Gujarat and Maharashtra.

IMD Director-General of Meteorology Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said night temperatures are also expected to stay higher than normal across many regions during the month.

However, he added that some relief is likely in parts of northwest and central India, along with nearby peninsular areas and southern parts of the northeast, where minimum temperatures may remain normal or even below normal.

On rainfall, the IMD said the country is likely to receive above-normal rain in May. But some areas in east, northeast and east-central India may get less rainfall than usual.
