Manipur fresh violence: Centre bolsters security amid ongoing unrest
Manipur fresh violence: Amid escalating tensions and ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo-Chin tribes and the Meiteis, the Indian government has dispatched over 900 additional security personnel to Manipur. The Home Ministry sent 10 more companies, consisting of personnel from CRPF, BSF, ITBP, and SSB, to the state's capital, Imphal.
This move comes three months after clashes erupted on May 3, leading to significant deployment of security forces, including the army, paramilitary Assam Rifles, and various Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) units, totaling over 40,000 personnel.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), representing the Meitei community, and the Kuki groups Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) and Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) have raised concerns about the alleged partisan roles played by state police and certain central forces.
Obstacles have arisen from women's organizations, which have reportedly been hindering independent operations of security forces by setting up roadblocks to delay the movement of CAPFs and state forces. Some media reports depict instances of women seeking the identity of central police personnel due to distrust and allegations of partisan behavior.
According to a Manipur Police statement, the security forces have successfully recovered 1,195 looted arms and 14,322 various types of ammunition from across the state. The violence has led to the looting of more than 4,000 sophisticated arms and a significant quantity of ammunition from police stations and outposts by mobs and insurgents since the clashes began.
