'Warm goodbye': Shehzad Poonawala resigns from BJP, cites 'pressing financial, personal issues'

PTC News Desk: Shehzad Poonawala has once again submitted his resignation to the BJP, urging the leadership to accept it and relieve him of his organisational responsibilities.

In a letter to BJP President Nitin Nabin, Poonawalla said he was thankful that the party had initially refused to accept his resignation and asked him to reconsider his decision. However, after giving the matter a lot of thought, he said he had made a final decision to step down from his party role and active membership.

Poonawalla said his decision was not due to any anger or resentment. He expressed his gratitude and respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin and other senior leaders, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and BL Santosh. He also thanked the BJP for giving him a platform and opportunities over the past five years.

"The events of the last few days, courtesy certain individuals about whom I have told you in great detail, have forced me to reinforce and stand by my earlier decision," he said, without naming the individuals.

The 38-year-old lawyer-turned-politician started his political career with the Congress. He later gained national attention after opposing Rahul Gandhi’s election as Congress president and eventually joined the BJP in late 2021.

After joining the BJP, Poonawalla became one of the party’s well-known national spokespersons. He regularly represented the party in TV debates, press conferences and on social media. He was also given charge of the BJP’s Delhi IT and social media department in 2021.

As one of the BJP’s prominent Muslim faces, he was often involved in major political debates and used to present the party’s views on controversial issues. He has now asked the BJP leadership to formally relieve him of all his organisational responsibilities after his earlier resignation was not accepted.
