Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Grounds on Saturday for the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government in West Bengal. West Bengal CM oath ceremony: Suvendu Adhikari is set to become the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal after taking oath at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. The oath will be administered by RN Ravi. Adhikari will be the state’s ninth Chief Minister, succeeding Mamata Banerjee, who had held the post since 2011.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, which also marks the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore according to the Bengali calendar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP chief ministers from other states, Union ministers and senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the event.
Adhikari had earlier played a major role in the Nandigram movement under the Trinamool Congress, which contributed to the fall of the 24-year Left Front rule and helped bring the TMC to power in the state. However, his relationship with Banerjee deteriorated in 2019, and he eventually left the TMC in 2021 before emerging as one of the BJP’s strongest faces against her government.
Speaking ahead of taking office, Adhikari said his government would function on the principle of “collective leadership” and that Cabinet members would play an active role in decision-making. Despite no longer being Chief Minister, Banerjee’s Facebook and X profiles still describe her as the “Honourable Chief Minister, West Bengal” along with her role as founder chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress.
