Worli hit-and-run: In a hit-and-run on Sunday, a speeding BMW car hit a two-wheeler-riding couple in Mumbai's Worli, killing the woman and injuring her husband.

The deceased has been identified as Kaveri Nakawa.

According to police sources, the 24-year-old son of a senior leader of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena drove the speeding BMW. The police investigation has also revealed that Mihir Shah was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Worli Police have detained Rajesh Shah, a local Shiv Sena (Shinde) leader in Palghar and also apprehended Mihir Shah.

Worli hit-and-run

According to Mumbai Police, the couple from the Koliwada neighbourhood of Worli was returning home from the Sassoon dock after fetching fish. Around 5.30 a.m., a speeding BMW car hit their two-wheeler from behind near Atria Mall.

The vehicle overturned after the husband lost his balance and the couple landed on the car's bonnet.

Pradik Nakva jumped from the moving car, but his wife Kaveri Nakawa was unable to do so because she was carrying a heavy load. Nakawa was dragged for 100 metres, causing severe injuries. Both were rushed to Nair Hospital for treatment, but the woman died as a result of her injuries.

'No interference...strict action will be taken': Eknath Shinde

Aditya Thackrey, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, later visited the Worli Police Station and met with the woman's husband. He wrote on social media platform X that Mumbai's traffic discipline and safety needed to be restored.

"The accident was unfortunate and sad. I spoke with the police, and there will be no interference in the case. Strict legal action will be taken. The police will not protect anybody," he said. "I want to make it clear that everyone is equal before the law. Even if he is a Shiv Sena worker, the law will take its course," the CM added.
