New Delhi, July 17: The opposition has announced its candidate for the post of Vice President of India.

Making the announcement, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said that Margaret Alva will be the opposition's candidate for the Vice-Presidential poll.

Former governor of Rajasthan Margaret Alva's candidature was finalised after a meeting at the residence of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. All major opposition parties including the Congress, the TMC, Left Front constituents, RJD, SP, and others attended the meeting. Meanwhile, the NDA has fielded West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar as its vice presidential candidate. The announcement was made on Saturday evening.

He announced support (for Yashwant Sinha) a few days ago and will announce his support (for Margaret Alva) soon," Pawar further said.

At the age of 42, Margaret Alva was made Central Minister, which in those days was a rarity.

Born in Mangalore in 1942, Alva grew up in different parts of the former Madras Presidency and imbibed the culture of the state, parts of which now belong to Andhra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.

Her father served in the Indian Civil Service. Alva was drawn into the political scene while staying with her in-laws, both parliamentarians. She was elected to the Lok Sabha for one term and to the Rajya Sabha for four consecutive terms.

Under Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Narasimha Rao, Alva took on a variety of responsibilities.

The Election Commission announced the elections for the 16th vice president of India to take place on August 6, 2022.
