'Clear contempt of SC': Amit Shah on Kejriwal's 'vote for broom, won't have to return to jail' remarks

PTC News Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has criticised Arvind Kejriwal for saying at an election rally that voting for the "broom" (the Aam Aadmi Party symbol) would ensure that he does not return to jail. Shah described the remark as a "clear contempt of the Supreme Court".

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Amit Shah also asked the judges who pronounced Arvind Kejriwal's interim bail judgement to investigate whether the order was "used or misused."

"I believe this constitutes clear contempt of the Supreme Court. So he wants to say that if he wins, even if he is found guilty, the Supreme Court will not sentence him to jail. Amit Shah added that now the judges who pronounced the judgement must see if it is used or misused.

He also stated that many people believe the Supreme Court's decision to grant interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case amounts to him receiving special treatment. Amit Shah stated that the decision in the case was not a routine judicial order.

"The Supreme Court has the right to interpret the law; I do not believe this is a routine decision. Many people in this country believe he received special treatment," Shah said

In response to a question about Kejriwal campaigning for the AAP and the Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Home Minister made a dig at the Delhi Chief Minister.

"Right now he (Arvind Kejriwal) is stuck in another issue (alleged assault on Swati Maliwal by CM's aide), let him get free from that then let's see what happens," Shah stated.

The Union Home Minister also dismissed Arvind Kejriwal's claims that the central government installed cameras in Tihar jail to keep an eye on him, stating that the Tihar jail administration is under the Delhi government.

"Tihar is with them (Delhi government), not with us. They are lying continuously. Jail administration is with the Delhi government, it's with Kejriwal. Not with the Home Ministry," Shah stated.
