Delhi excise policy case: In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Friday adjourned petition of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the CBI in the Delhi excise policy case. The apex court has now scheduled the next hearing for September 5.
On the other hand, a Bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan has granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) time to file a counter affidavit in the ongoing case against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The court also provided Kejriwal two days to file a rejoinder.
This judicial process follows closely after a Delhi court extended Arvind Kejriwal's judicial custody until August 27, related to a case registered by the CBI.
Arvind Kejriwal’s legal troubles began with his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy case. His arrest came shortly after the Delhi High Court denied him interim protection from arrest. Subsequently, on June 26, Kejriwal was taken into custody by the CBI from the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court and sent to judicial custody on June 29.
The Supreme Court had earlier granted interim bail to the Delhi CM on May 10, allowing him to campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections. However, Kejriwal surrendered to Tihar Jail officials on June 2. On July 30, the CBI filed its fourth supplementary charge sheet, naming Arvind Kejriwal as an accused, alleging that he was "one of the key conspirators" in the case.
Despite the interim bail granted by the Supreme Court on July 12 in the ED case, Arvind Kejriwal remains in jail under the CBI's custody.
