PM Modi references Ambedkar to criticise Congress on reservations: ‘Nehru would have…’

PTC News Desk: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first prime minister, of "opposing" reservations for the underprivileged castes.

The prime minister stated, "Nehru would never have agreed to quotas for SCs, STs, and OBCs had it not been for Baba Saheb Ambedkar," while speaking at a rally in Motihari, Bihar. Nehru had communicated his opinions on the matter to the nation's then-chief ministers in letters."

"Under several prime ministers, the Congress has exhibited this characteristic. Whether it was Rajiv Gandhi or Indira Gandhi, they were all against reservations. "The Congress has never shown respect for SCs, STs, or OBCs," Modi was cited by PTI.

Modi made the claim while attacking the opposition parties, particularly the Congress, saying they were promoting a "falsehood" that the BJP could abolish quotas by amending the Constitution if it were to win a resounding majority and return to power.

"In actuality, we have been defending the rights of the marginalised castes. The rights of SCs, STs, and OBCs are only guaranteed by the NDA, which is governed by the BJP, he continued.

The opposition INDIA group was accused by the prime minister of planning to grant reservation benefits "based on religion".

"They have only one vote bank left, which is why they want to take this action. They only care about those waging a vote jihad now that SCs, STs, and OBCs no longer back them, Modi continued.

Modi has often charged the Congress of attempting to distribute reservations intended for the SC, ST, and OBC populations on the grounds of religion throughout the Lok Sabha election campaign.

"They (the Congress) are the ones who obstruct the Parliament's operations, challenge the Election Commission and the Electronic Voting Machine, and now they are defaming the Constitution in order to increase their vote bank. During a rally in Medak, Telangana, he had declared, "Until the day I die, I will not allow them to give the reservation meant for Dalits, SCs, STs, and OBCs to the Muslims in the name of religion."
