Rajya Sabha elections: Sonia Gandhi to file nomination on February 14

Rajya Sabha elections: Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi will file her nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections tomorrow, and the final decision on which state she will represent in the upper House of Parliament will be made tonight, sources said.

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president for nearly 22 years from 1998 to 2022, is a five-time Lok Sabha member.

According to sources, her son Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will accompany her when she files her nomination for the Rajya Sabha election.

"Final decision on the state to contest from will be taken by tonight," a person familiar with the matter said.

According to top sources, while Rajasthan is the "top" choice, some other state units have offered her the nomination.

They said she is likely to choose Rajasthan, where the party's seat has become vacant following the retirement of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was also a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Parliamentary Party's chairperson, has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, on several occasions.

The move to file nominations for the Rajya Sabha comes ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections, which are expected to take place in April-May this year.

The Congress has yet to announce candidates for the biennial elections for 56 seats in 15 states. The last day for filing nominations is February 15.

The Election Commission announced last month the schedule for the biennial election for 56 Rajya Sabha seats, with voting taking place on February 27.
