PTC Web Desk: The National Security Act (NSA) detention of Waris Punjab De head and newly elected MP from Khadoor Sahib Amritpal Singh and nine of his associates has been extended by one year. The original NSA detention period for Amritpal Singh and three associates was set to expire on July 24, while the NSA detention for six other associates was due to end on June 18.

Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh was arrested from Moga’s Rode village on April 23, 2023, after a more than one-month-long manhunt. Following his arrest, NSA was invoked against him and he was sent to Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

The Punjab Police had initiated a crackdown against him and his associates following the Ajnala incident on February 23 last year. During this incident, Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some wielding swords and guns, breached barricades and stormed into a police station on the outskirts of Amritsar city. They clashed with the police to secure the release of his aide, Lovepreet Singh Toofan.

Amritpal Singh and his associates have been charged in multiple criminal cases, including spreading communal disharmony, attempted murder, assaults on police personnel, and obstructing public servants in the lawful discharge of their duties.
