Paris Olympics 2024: Mirabai Chanu finishes 4th, misses out on medal
Paris Olympics 2024: Mirabai Chanu missed out on medal after finishing fourth in the Women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Indian weightlifter finished with a score of 199.
Chanu was India's solo contestant in weightlifting at the 2024 Summer Games and was regarded as one of the event's top medal prospects. The 29-year-old won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
China's Hou Zhihui won the gold medal with a Games record of 117kg. She lifted 206kg on her final effort at the clean and jerk, defeating Romania's Mihaela Cambei, who will take silver with 205 kg. Thailand's Surodchana Khambao finished third with 200kg. Meanwhile, India's Mirabai Chanu finished fourth.
If she had won the medal, Chanu would have become India's first weightlifter to win two Olympic medals.
Mirabai Chanu has remained one of India's best weightlifters, having won an Olympic silver medal, a world championship, and three Commonwealth Games gold medals.
She became only the second Indian lifter, after Karnam Malleswari, to win a silver medal at the Olympics.
Her highest effort since Tokyo was at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she lifted 201kg (88kg 113kg). She won silver in Tokyo by lifting 202kg (87kg plus 115kg).
