'Truth Will Prevail': Vinesh Phogat vows to continue fight for justice

PTC News Desk: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, recently returned from the Paris Olympics, expressed her determination to persist in her fight for the advancement of Indian wrestling, asserting that "truth will prevail." Phogat was met with a grand reception upon her arrival, as hundreds of supporters gathered outside IGI Airport on Saturday to welcome her.

Phogat’s journey at the Paris Olympics ended with her disqualification due to being overweight after reaching the 50kg final. Her appeal against this disqualification was subsequently rejected by the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In her address to the enthusiastic crowd, Phogat emphasised, “Our fight has not ended and will continue. I pray to God that the truth will prevail.” She has been a prominent figure in the ongoing protests against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its former chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers.

Phogat, along with fellow Olympians Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, led protests at Jantar Mantar last year, demanding action against Singh. The wrestlers faced eviction while trying to march towards the new Parliament building as part of their demonstration.

Reflecting on the warm welcome she received, Phogat shared that the support from her fellow Indians, her village, and family members provided her with the strength to move forward. “As I received love from my fellow Indians, village, and family members, I feel I have gained some courage to heal from this wound. Perhaps I might return to wrestling,” said the 29-year-old wrestler.

Phogat described missing out on an Olympic medal as a profound personal disappointment. “I don’t know how long it will take to heal this wound or whether I will continue in wrestling, but the courage I gained today, I want to use it in the right direction,” she added.
