Dandiya is over, dresses are going back: Viral video of return parcels splits the Internet

PTC Web Desk: Festival season turns shopping carts into dressing rooms. Lehengas, jewellery and accessories fly off e-commerce platforms as people get ready for the biggest nights of the year. But what happens to all that finery once the music stops? A video that recently went viral on social media has put that question back in the spotlight.

What the video shows

The clip was shared on X by a user named Nishant. It shows a huge heap of parcels outside a residential complex, piled up beneath a shutter and spilling onto the ground. Each package carries a shipping label and barcode. The person filming opens a large pink bag stuffed with even more parcels, and nearby, white sacks are also seen overflowing with returned items.

The caption took a sharp dig at the trend: “Dandiya over... dress returns. Shameless generation.”

Guesses, not facts

Many viewers assumed that some shoppers ordered expensive outfits and accessories for Navratri and dandiya events, wore them once or twice, and sent them back after the festivities. It’s worth remembering, though, that the real reasons behind these returns haven’t been independently confirmed. Plenty of them could be ordinary cases, such as a bad fit or an item that didn’t look as good in person.

The internet picks sides

Once the video spread, the comments section turned into a debate. One user wrote that they’d heard the advice, “If it feels pricey, just return it after the event.” Others worried that this kind of behaviour will push companies to tighten return rules, hurting honest customers too. Some pointed to small online sellers, for whom every returned parcel is a direct loss.

On the other side, people argued that if a company offers exchanges and refunds, customers have every right to use them.

The bigger question

This isn’t really about one video. It points to a thin line between a shopper’s rights, basic ethics and the damage to small businesses, a debate that tends to resurface every festive season.

So where do you stand? Is a return policy a customer’s safety net, or are some people stretching it too far?
