Bangladesh: Hindu widow alleges sexual assault by 2 men, says 'accused tied her to tree and cut off her hair'
PTC Web Desk: A 40-year-old Hindu woman has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by two men in Kaliganj, a sub-district of Jhenaidah in central Bangladesh. The incident has sparked concern after a series of communal violence cases against Hindus of late.
According to her statement, the woman had bought a small parcel of land along with a two-storey house in Kaliganj municipality around two-and-a-half years ago from a local man, Shahin, and his brother. She alleged that soon after the purchase, Shahin began harassing her and making inappropriate advances, which she consistently rejected.
The woman told the police that on Saturday evening, when two of her relatives were visiting her home, Shahin and another man, Hasan, allegedly forced their way inside and sexually assaulted her. She further alleged that the two men demanded money from her and attacked her relatives when she refused, forcing them to flee.
As per her complaint, the accused later tied her to a tree, cut off her hair and recorded the act, which was subsequently circulated on social media. The woman alleged that she was physically tortured and eventually lost consciousness. Local residents later rescued her and took her to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital.
Hospital superintendent Dr Md Mostafizur Rahman said the woman did not initially disclose the details of the incident but medical findings later indicated signs of abuse.
Following the incident, the survivor filed a formal complaint at Kaliganj Police Station, naming both accused. Jhenaidah Additional Superintendent of Police Billal Hossain confirmed that her statement has been recorded and assured that strict legal action would be taken after a thorough investigation.
