Over 200 Indians rescued from cyber-scam factories in Cambodia

PTC News Desk: The Indian government rescued around 250 people in Cambodia who had been forced to run online scams. They were promised jobs but were forced to engage in illegal cyber work, according to the Centre.

According to recent reports, more than 5,000 Indians stuck in Cambodia have been forced to engage in cybercrime.

Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world are said to have fallen victim to human traffickers operating job scams in Southeast Asia.

Victims, who are typically young and tech-savvy, are promised jobs and then duped into illegal online work ranging from money laundering and cryptocurrency fraud to so-called love scams, in which they pose as lovers online.

According to a UN report published in August 2023, at least 120,000 people in Myanmar and another 100,000 in Cambodia were forced to operate cyber-fraud schemes.

This is the most recent in a string of rescues of such victims in Southeast Asia. In March, police rescued hundreds of people from a scam centre in the Philippines, where they were forced to deceive others by expressing romantic interest online using a false identity.
