Singapore: Indian national gets 20 years in jail for beating girlfriend to death

PTC Web Desk: M Krishnan, a 40-year-old Indian national, has received a sentence of 20 years in jail for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The case revolved around his assault on his girlfriend, Mallika Begum Rahamansa Abdul Rahman, aged 40, resulting in her death on January 17, 2019. Krishnan's violent outburst, which involved punching and kicking Mallika, was prompted by his distress over her relationships with other men.

The sentencing, delivered by Justice Valerie Thean, took into account Krishnan's history of domestic abuse and his claim of reform in 2018. Despite his diagnosis of intermittent explosive disorder, the court noted the role of alcohol in exacerbating his actions. Justice Thean emphasised the severity of Krishnan's repeated abuse against women, leading to the imposition of the maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.

Krishnan's violent behaviour escalated in early 2019 following Mallika's admission of infidelity. He physically assaulted her, resulting in fatal injuries, and subsequently surrendered to the authorities. While Krishnan's defense highlighted factors such as his early guilty plea and cooperation, the prosecution emphasised his past violent tendencies and urged the court to send a strong message against such behaviour.

The case sheds light on the complex interplay between personal relationships, mental health, and substance abuse. Krishnan's intermittent explosive disorder, characterized by impulsive anger outbursts, was compounded by his consumption of alcohol, leading to tragic consequences. Despite efforts to control his alcohol intake, Krishnan's judgment was clouded by Mallika's infidelity, ultimately culminating in violence.
