Taiwan earthquake: Two Indians have been reported missing after the earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday. The missing Indians include a man and a woman who were last seen in Taroko Gorge near the epicentre.

Search operations are ongoing to locate them, according to people familiar with the situation. At least nine people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured in Taiwan's early morning earthquake, which was described as the strongest in 25 years.

The epicentre of the quake was off the shore of rural, mountainous Hualien County, where some buildings rocked at extreme angles and their ground floors were crushed.

Just over 150 kilometres (93 miles) away in Taipei, the capital, tiles fell from older buildings, and children were moved to sports areas and given yellow safety helmets.

The earthquake and its aftershocks resulted in 24 landslides and damage to roads, bridges, and tunnels. It also triggered a tsunami warning, which was eventually lifted.

Traffic along the East Coast came to a halt as falling debris struck tunnels and highways. Train service was interrupted across the island, with some tracks twisted from the quake's impact. Underground service was also interrupted in Taipei, where sections of a freshly built elevated line split but did not collapse.
