US-Iran tensions: US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran that the ceasefire with Iran could be terminated if a broader agreement to end hostilities is not reached by Wednesday. He also signalled returning to possible military escalation amid evolving tensions in the gulf.

"Maybe I won't extend it, but the blockade (on Iranian ports) is going to remain," he said. "So you have a blockade, and unfortunately we have to start dropping bombs again".

The remarks follow stalled diplomatic engagements between the US and Iran. The recent talks between both the nations in Islamabad also remained inconclusive and failed to produce any breakthrough.

The situation has become more tense due to issues around the Strait of Hormuz, an important route that carries about 20% of the world’s oil and LNG supplies.

The US says the route is open and safe, but Iran has warned that it could limit access if US pressure continues.

Since mid-April, the US has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports to control ship movement linked to Iran. US officials say some ships trying to enter or leave these ports have been turned back. Iran has criticised this action, calling it illegal and provocative.

Iranian leaders have also rejected US claims about the situation in the Strait and ongoing talks. They warned that if the blockade continues, it could affect shipping through Hormuz, which is worrying global markets already concerned about supply disruptions.
