US President Donald Trump evacuated after shots fired at White House dinner, shooter arrested
PTC News Desk: A brief moment of panic broke out at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night after gunshots were reported, leading to a rapid security response. President Donald Trump and other senior US leaders were quickly taken out of the venue in Washington.
Guests rushed to take cover as shots were heard, but officials later confirmed that Trump was safe and no injuries were immediately reported.
Secret Service agents and other security personnel quickly entered the hall while hundreds of attendees hid under tables. People shouted warnings like “get down” as several guests said they heard around five to eight gunshots. The hall, filled with journalists, celebrities, and political leaders waiting for Trump’s speech, was evacuated. National Guard troops were deployed inside, and while guests were allowed to leave, they were not allowed back in. Security outside was also tightened.
At the time of the incident, guests were having dinner, and staff were preparing to serve the next course when security officers suddenly told everyone to get down.
The event was held at the Hilton hotel, which usually remains open to other guests during the dinner, with security mainly focused on the ballroom and limited checks for those not attending.
Authorities later said the suspect will face charges including using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. The accused is expected to appear in court on Monday.
