Communal clash in one of major icons in Kaithal; 1 die

Kaithal, that always stood for Hindu-Sikh unity, got its name blurred following communal clashes yesterday.

A 50-year-old man was killed and 16 others sustained serious injuries in a clash between two communities on Friday morning. The clash was reported from Badsui village of Kaithal district where the land is shared by two shrines. The clash was the result of the ongoing dispute over the land and “local electoral politics”.

The deceased has been identified as Shamsher Singh. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at Rajendra govt hospital in Patiala. According to media reports, the police has rounded 17 persons in the case.

What exactly happened?

Two shrines belonging two different communities share a common land. Very recently, under Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLAD) funds were sanctioned for the village. On Thursday, one of the communities built a wall between the two shrines using those funds. On Friday morning, when the other community came to know about the wall, it opposed the decision. A common meeting was called to resolve the issue. But, the discussion went out of control and resulted in a clash.

The Superintendent of Police told the media that it has happened because of some local electoral politics in the village. The media reports said that police is making every possible effort to control the situation.
