Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Daljit Singh Cheema on Friday asked the chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh to be very cautious about issuing statements on coronavirus based on hearsay keeping in view the damage they could cause to public morale.

His statement quoting PGIMER, Chandigarh and the Union ministry of health and family welfare having confirmed community spread of coronavirus was contradicted by both the organizations.

Daljit Singh Cheema said that it was unfortunate that the chief minister had issued a statement without being sure of the same. “Captain Amarinder Singh could have easily rung up the PGIMER Director and confirmed first hand if it had really come out with any study that coronavirus would peak in mid-September and could infect 58 percent of the Indian population including 87 percent in Punjab”.

Cheema said now that the PGIMER, as well as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, had repudiated the statements made by the chief minister and the Health ministry had made it clear that there was no community transmission in India, the CM should issue a clarification immediately to put the peoples’ minds to rest.

Captain Amarinder Singh had said that the projections by scientists and medical experts suggested that the pandemic would peak in India by July-August, and around 58% of Indians would get infected, with 87% of people likely to get affected in Punjab.
