Cyclone Gaja : Death toll rises to 33,thousands affected

The death toll in cyclone 'Gaja' has touched 33 and left a trail of destruction across Tamil Nadu with 30,000 electricity poles and over a lakh trees getting uprooted.

As many as 82,000 people were evacuated to 471 relief centres.However, 20 men, 11 women and 2 boys died in cyclone incidents.

The cyclone wreaked havoc in Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai districts. It uprooted many trees and electric poles in the districts. It also damaged many thatched houses. The power supply in the area was also affected. As many as 46 substations were damaged in these districts. It would take a minimum of two days for power supply to restore in the area.

Besides this, the mobile communication network has also been disrupted. A holiday was announced in Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Trichy districts due  to cyclone.
