Arijit Singhs retirement from playback singing: Fans struggle to believe the shocking decision
Fans have expressed shock, denial and disappointment, with many hoping the news was not true
PTC Web Desk: Popular Bollywood singer Arijit Singh’s unexpected announcement of stepping away from playback singing has sent shockwaves through the music industry and left millions of fans in disbelief.
The singer shared the announcement on his official social media platforms, where he revealed that he would no longer accept new playback singing assignments. Soon after, screenshots of an alleged post from his private X (formerly Twitter) account began circulating widely, adding fuel to the speculation around his sudden decision.
In the viral post, Singh opened up about the personal reasons behind his move, explaining that the decision was neither impulsive nor recent. “There isn’t just one reason. There are many, and I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. I finally found the courage to do it,” he wrote.
“One of the simplest truths is that I get bored very quickly. That’s why I keep changing arrangements of the same songs while performing live. And honestly, I got bored.”
Earlier, in a heartfelt New Year message to his followers, Arijit thanked listeners for their unwavering support over the years and confirmed his decision to step away from playback singing.
“Hello, Happy New Year to all. Thank you for showering me with so much love throughout my journey. I am happy to announce that I will not be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. It has been a beautiful journey, and I am calling it off,” he wrote.
The announcement triggered an emotional reaction across social media platforms. Fans expressed shock, denial, and disappointment, with many hoping the news was not true.
One user wrote, “Vote to cancel this announcement. Please tell me this is a joke.”
Another fan shared, “Your voice has been a part of our lives. Even if we don’t understand the reason, we hope you find peace and happiness.”
Arijit Singh’s journey in the music world began with the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005. He made his Bollywood playback debut with “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2 in 2011. However, it was “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 (2013) that turned him into a household name and earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.
Over the years, Singh has delivered an extraordinary range of songs, from soulful romantic ballads to devotional tracks and energetic chartbusters, establishing himself as one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema.
Apart from singing, he is also a composer, music producer, and instrumentalist, earning multiple accolades for his contribution to India’s diverse music landscape.
As fans continue to process the news, questions remain about what lies ahead for the singer; and whether this marks a permanent farewell or simply a new chapter in Arijit Singh’s artistic journey.
