Jalandhar court rejects Gurdas Maan's bail plea

In a major setback to Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan, the District and Sessions Court, Jalandhar, on Wednesday rejected the bail in the case of objectionable remarks made during a religious fair at Dera Baba Murad Shah in Nakodar last month.

Gurdas Maan sparked a row by describing Ladi Shah, who was the ruler of the Dera, as a descendant of third Sikh Guru Amar Das.

Therefore, the Sikh organizations including the Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee filed a case against him for hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.

The hearing was adjourning on Tuesday. It resumed on Wednesday where the bail plea was rejected.

Likewise, Maan had filed an anticipatory bail plea in the District and Sessions Court. Advocates appearing for Sikh organisations, Parminder Singh Dhingra and Ravinder Singh, said that Mann’s words had hurt the religious sentiments of the community.

They said if Mann would stay outside, it could increase people’s wrath, and hence, he should not be given bail.

Meanwhile, Mann’s lawyer Darshan Singh Dayal argued that the singer had made the statement by mistake.

Even Mann had apologised with folded hands and released a video on social media. The lawyer of Sikh organisations opposed and said as per the law, such an apology was not valid.

A case has been registered against Mann under Section 295-A of the IPC at the Nakodar police station.
