PTC Web Desk: A tense police operation in Bihar’s Motihari district ended in a deadly encounter, claiming the lives of a wanted gangster, Kundan Thakur, along with two of his associates. The incident also led to the tragic death of a police constable during the exchange of fire.
The encounter comes shortly after an audio recording of Kundan Thakur surfaced, in which he could be heard openly challenging the police. In the clip, reportedly recorded just two days before the operation, he warned officers of severe consequences, claiming that several policemen could be killed in an encounter while he would manage to escape. He also attempted to portray his remarks as “advice” rather than a threat.
Thakur further alleged that the police had been troubling his family and issued warnings of retaliation if such actions continued. He maintained that he was not on the run and would face the police directly whenever confronted.
Police officials stated that Thakur had been under watch for a long time. Acting on precise intelligence inputs about his location, a special team carried out a late-night raid and surrounded the suspected hideout. However, as soon as the team moved in, they were met with sudden gunfire from the criminals.
During the shootout, an STF jawan was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. In response, the police returned fire in self-defence, leading to the killing of Thakur and two others at the spot. The exchange of bullets reportedly continued for some time, creating panic in the surrounding area.
East Champaran Superintendent of Police, Swarn Prabhat, confirmed that efforts had been made earlier to arrest the accused, but he continued to evade capture while issuing threats. He added that the police were forced to act after coming under direct attack during the operation.
Authorities have also taken into custody the owner of the house where the criminals were hiding, identified as Ujjwal Kumar, along with his father. Both are being questioned to determine whether they knowingly provided shelter to the accused.
Security in the area has since been tightened, with additional police forces deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.
