Centre summons Meta Public Policy head tomorrow over removal of PMs post

PTC News Desk: The Centre has summoned Meta's Head of Public Policy, Joel Kaplan and an Instagram technical official for a meeting on August 5. The summon has been issued by the government in order to understand the technicalities of Meta's algorithm and why certain content receives greater visibility on its platforms, making it latest as part of a wider regulatory review of the social media giant.

During the meeting, officials are expected to raise concerns over complaints that certain posts, including those seen as critical of the government, receive unusually high visibility on Meta's platforms.
The government will also ask Meta to submit a written explanation about the technical error that resulted in the removal of a post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to sources, the Centre is also likely to seek a written apology from Meta over the incident.
The meeting comes as social media platforms face increased scrutiny over content moderation, transparency of recommendation algorithms and accountability.
Another key issue on the agenda will be Meta's handling of Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) in paid Instagram advertisements. The government had earlier issued a notice to the company over the alleged presence of such content.
