PTC News Desk: Several people, including four Indian students, were injured in a knife attack at a foreign students’ hostel at a university in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic on Saturday, according to the Indian Embassy in Moscow.

Initial local media reports said two police officers were also injured while trying to stop the attack. The incident happened at a dormitory of the State Medical University in Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan. Russia’s Interior Ministry said early information shows that a 15-year-old carrying a knife entered the dormitory and attacked students living there, injuring many of them. The suspect has been taken into custody. Officials have not yet shared details about how serious the injuries are.

Calling it an "unfortunate incident", the Indian Embassy in Moscow said, "Several people, including four Indian students, have been injured." It added, officials are closely monitoring the situation and are in touch with Russian authorities. Officials from the Indian Consulate in Kazan are travelling to Ufa to assist the injured students and coordinate further support.

The Investigative Committee has started an investigation into the incident. A video shared widely on social media shows police taking the accused away through heavy snow after the attack.

Russian authorities have not yet revealed the reason behind the attack or if the suspect knew the victims. The Baza channel, which is said to have links with Russian authorities, reported that the attacker may be connected to a banned neo-Nazi group.
