Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered an FIR against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and several social media users as part of an investigation into AI-generated morphed videos allegedly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to police sources, the videos were circulated on Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, following the students' protest held at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Investigators are examining whether the manipulated content misled the public and violated provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.

Cyber Crime officials are tracing the source of the AI-generated videos and investigating how the content gained widespread reach across social media platforms.

The investigation will also assess whether Meta's existing systems for detecting and limiting manipulated content were sufficient. Authorities are further looking into the role of individuals accused of creating, uploading or sharing the altered videos.

The police said the probe is currently at an early stage and no final findings have been reached. Further legal action will depend on the digital evidence collected during the investigation.

Meta representatives summoned earlier

The FIR comes shortly after Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police called Meta representatives for questioning regarding the company's mechanisms for identifying and removing AI-generated scams, fake advertisements and other misleading content.

A representative of the company reportedly appeared before investigators and explained Meta's content moderation process and compliance framework.

Separate zero FIR registered over protest remarks

In a separate development, the police have registered a Zero FIR against a woman over alleged objectionable remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar last week.

The case was registered on July 29 at the Expressway Police Station in Gautam Buddh Nagar after a complaint was filed by Ghaziabad resident Smriti Singh against Noida resident Ruchika Singh.

Complaint alleges remarks could disturb public order

According to the complaint, Ruchika Singh allegedly used abusive and objectionable language against the Prime Minister during the July 23 protest. The complainant alleged that the remarks undermined the dignity of the constitutional office and were intended to spread hatred, provoke ill-will and disturb public peace.

The police have registered the case under Sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 353(1) (statements conducive to public mischief) and 356(1) (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Officials said the matter is under investigation, and further action will be taken based on the findings.
