Pandoh Dam water release: The Pandoh Dam water release alert has been issued by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) after a rise in water inflow into the reservoir. Authorities have announced that additional water will be released from the dam on Saturday, prompting a safety advisory for people living along the Beas River.

According to BBMB officials, the Pandoh Dam water release alert comes as nearly 2,000 cusecs of water will be discharged from the dam, located around 20km upstream of Mandi town in Himachal Pradesh. As a result, the flow of the Beas River is expected to exceed 6,000 cusecs.

Under the Pandoh Dam water release alert, local residents have been advised to stay away from the Beas River and avoid all water-related activities until further notice. Authorities have urged people not to visit the riverbanks as water levels may rise rapidly following the release.

Why water Is being released

The Pandoh Dam is part of the 990 MW Beas-Sutlej Link Project, which diverts the flow of the Beas River through a diversion dam for hydroelectric power generation.

During the summer and monsoon seasons, when water inflow into the reservoir increases significantly, excess water is released back into the Beas River to maintain safe water levels at the dam.

Authorities urge public to remain alert

BBMB has appealed to residents living along the riverbanks to follow all safety instructions and avoid entering the river until conditions return to normal.

Officials have warned that water levels can rise suddenly after the release, making the river dangerous for bathing, fishing and other activities.

Past incidents raise safety concerns

The release of excess water from Pandoh Dam has, on several occasions, affected low-lying areas in Mandi, Hamirpur and Kangra districts. Previous incidents have resulted in flooding, damage to property and loss of life.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and cooperate with local administration to ensure safety during the increased water discharge from the dam.
