Government increases passport fees in revised structure, new rates to be effective July 1| Check new rates

PTC News Desk: The Central government has increased passport fees for the first time in almost 14 years. From July 1, a new 36-page passport will cost Rs 2,500 under the normal scheme and Rs 5,000 under the Tatkaal scheme.

The revised charges were announced a day after the government clarified that a passport is mainly a travel document and not proof of Indian citizenship.

Under the new rates, adults applying for a fresh or reissued 36-page passport will have to pay Rs 2,500 under the normal scheme, up from Rs 1,500. Under the Tatkaal scheme, the fee has increased from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000.

The fee for a 60-page passport has also gone up. It will now cost Rs 3,500 under the normal scheme instead of Rs 2,000, while the Tatkaal fee has increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000.

The new fee structure was notified by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026. This is the first major increase in passport fees since 2012.

People applying for a replacement of a lost or damaged passport will also have to pay more. A replacement 36-page passport will now cost Rs 5,000 under the normal scheme and Rs 7,500 under Tatkaal. A replacement 60-page passport will cost Rs 6,000 under the normal scheme and Rs 8,500 under Tatkaal.

For applicants below 18 years of age, a fresh or reissued 36-page passport will cost Rs 1,750 under the normal scheme and Rs 4,250 under Tatkaal. If a minor's passport is lost or damaged, the replacement fee will be Rs 4,250 under the normal scheme and Rs 6,750 under Tatkaal.

The MEA said the revised fees will apply to all passport applications submitted on or after July 1. The notification, issued on June 20 under the Passports Act, 1967, also updates the charges for several other travel documents and passport-related services.
