Senior diplomat and high commissioner to UK Vikram Doraiswami appointed India’s next Ambassador to China

The announcement comes at a time when both the nations are attempting rebuild ties strained by over four-year-long border standoff in eastern Ladakh.

PTC News Desk: Senior diplomat Vikram K. Doraiswami, currently serving as high commissioner to United Kingdom, has been appointed as the new Ambassador of India to the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Thursday.


He is expected to assume charge shortly. 


“Vikram K. Doraiswami (IFS:1992), currently India’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom, has been appointed as the next ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.” 


The announcement comes at a time when both the nations are attempting rebuild ties strained by over four-year-long border standoff in eastern Ladakh. However, recent months have witnessed cautious efforts by both the sides to stabilise through continuous diplomatic engagement. Doraiswami will replace Pradeep Kumar Rawat.


Other key appointments include Secretary (East) P. Kumaran being posted to London, Additional Secretary Puneet Agarwal to Thailand, Nagesh Singh moving from Thailand to Australia.


Notably, Doraiswami holds significant experience in China affairs, having earlier served at Indian missions in Beijing and Hong Kong. Besides, his expertise also includes proficienty in multiple languages including Chinese. 


Meanwhile, he is also expected to play significant role in navigating complex bilateral relationship between the two Asian neighbours. Foreign experts suggest his diplomatic experience and and familiarity with multilateral and regional issues are likely to be significant assets as New Delhi seeks to recalibrate its approach to Beijing.
