PTC Web Desk: Uber India CEO Prabhjeet Singh has stepped down from his role and will join OpenAI as the company's India Managing Director in September. The move marks a major leadership transition for both Uber and OpenAI as the artificial intelligence company expands its presence in India.

As Uber India CEO Prabhjeet Singh prepares to take charge of OpenAI's India operations, he will become the company's senior-most executive in the country. He will report to Kiran Manni, who was appointed Managing Director for OpenAI's Asia-Pacific region earlier this year.

The appointment of Uber India CEO Prabhjeet Singh highlights OpenAI's growing focus on the Indian market. He will lead the company's consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and overall business operations across India.

OpenAI said Prabhjeet Singh will focus on expanding partnerships and strengthening India's AI ecosystem. He will work with businesses, consumers, educational institutions and government organisations to increase the adoption of artificial intelligence solutions across the country.

The company also expects him to play a key role in driving enterprise growth and supporting responsible AI adoption in India.

A decade-long journey at Uber

Prabhjeet Singh joined Uber in August 2015 as General Manager and Head of Strategy. In June 2020, he was promoted to President of Uber India and South Asia, where he led the company's business operations across the region.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Singh earlier worked as an Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company before joining Uber.

Major achievements during his tenure

During his 10-year stint at Uber, Prabhjeet Singh led several important initiatives that helped expand the company's presence in India. Under his leadership:

Uber expanded into Tier-II cities and several non-metro markets. Services such as Uber Moto, Uber Auto and Intercity rides were scaled across the country. The company strengthened partnerships with fleet operators and drivers, including Everest Fleet. Metro ticket booking was integrated into the Uber app in multiple cities.

More than 10 million metro rides have been booked through the Uber app using the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform. Uber also announced a strategic investment of Rs 60 crore in ONDC to support digital mobility services.

Uber responds to leadership change

Reacting to Singh's resignation, an Uber spokesperson said India remains one of the company's most important global markets and continues to be a key driver of innovation and long-term growth.

The company thanked Singh for his leadership and contributions over the past decade, adding that it remains fully committed to its next phase of growth in India. Uber has not yet announced his successor but is expected to reveal its leadership transition plans in the coming weeks.
