Kabaddi promoter shot dead during match in Mohali’s Sohana; questions raised over Punjab law and order
According to preliminary information, the attackers managed to reach close to the players by posing as fans seeking selfies
PTC News Desk: In a chilling reminder of Punjab’s deteriorating law and order, a kabaddi promoter and player was shot dead after unidentified assailants opened fire during a live kabaddi match in Sohana, Mohali, on Monday evening, triggering panic among players and spectators. The victim, Rana Balachauria, a kabaddi tournament promoter and coach, sustained a gunshot wound to the head when attackers barged into the venue and began firing indiscriminately. He was rushed in a critical condition to Fortis Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to preliminary information, the attackers managed to reach close to the players by posing as fans seeking selfies, highlighting a complete breakdown of security arrangements at the venue. The assailants reportedly fired around 12 rounds before fleeing, creating chaos at the ground in Sector 82 where the match was underway.
Eyewitnesses said many initially mistook the gunshots for firecrackers, but panic quickly set in as spectators realised that live firing was taking place. The incident occurred shortly before Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh was scheduled to attend the Kabaddi Cup, further underlining the potential scale of the tragedy.
Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans said the attackers fired four to five rounds at Rana Balachauria. While initial inputs suggested the assailants escaped in a Bolero vehicle, the police are also verifying reports that some suspects fled on motorcycles. The number of attackers is believed to be three to four.
The four-day Kabaddi Cup is being organised by the Kabaddi Cup Gurdwara Management Committee and Vedwan Sports Club, Sohana. The match was being streamed live at the time, and the sound of gunfire was captured on cameras installed at the ground.
While the police have said that all angles are being investigated, including possible gang rivalry, the brazen nature of the attack at a public sporting event has intensified concerns over the state’s ability to ensure safety. CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being examined to identify and trace the attackers.
As Punjab grapples with rising incidents of violent crime, the killing has once again brought the spotlight back on the failure of law enforcement to prevent such attacks and secure public spaces. Further developments in the case are awaited.
