Report from Amritsar by Maninder Monga: Amid an economic downturn affecting private bus operators in Punjab, the Punjab Motor Union has decided to suspend services, impacting the transportation sector. Private bus operators, grappling with financial challenges, are set to observe Diwali this year with a symbolic gesture—parking their buses and displaying banners and posters highlighting their plight.

Ashok Mannan, president of the Punjab Motor Union, expressed concern about the economic hardship faced by private bus operators due to the government's imposition of taxes and the increasing cost of fuel and toll taxes. "Despite appeals to the government for relief, the private transport sector has not seen any concrete measures to alleviate its financial burden," he rued.

Ashok Mannan said while the government provided free travel for women on state-run buses, private bus operators faced economic challenges without any assistance. He urged the authorities to consider reducing toll taxes and providing subsidies to private bus operators.

Notably, private bus operators are seeking parity with government buses by requesting reduced toll taxes and free travel for women on private buses during the Diwali season. The decision to halt services temporarily is a symbolic protest against the economic challenges faced by private operators, particularly in light of the upcoming festival.

The Punjab Motor Union has underscored the need for urgent attention to the issues faced by private bus operators, appealing for relief measures and a collaborative effort to address the financial strain on the sector.
