S. Parkash Badal death: PM Modi, other political leaders express grief over demise of SAD stalwart

S. Parkash Badal death: Former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal patron Sardar Parkash Singh Badal is no more. He was 95.

As the news of his demise surfaced, several political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered their condolences.

Taking to Twitter to express condolences over the senior SAD leader's demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Extremely saddened by the passing away of Shri Parkash Singh Badal Ji. He was a colossal figure of Indian politics and a remarkable statesman who contributed greatly to our nation. He worked tirelessly for the progress of Punjab and anchored the state through critical times."

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condoled the senior leader's death and tweeted, "Anguished by the demise of former MP and Minister, Shri Dilip Gandhi ji. He distinguished himself as an able administrator & Parliamentarian.”

"He worked towards the welfare of farmers & other weaker sections of our society. Condolences to his family and well wishers. Om Shanti" he added.

"Saddened by the news of passing away of former Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Prakash Singh Badal. My deepest condolences to his family and friends," tweeted Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha

Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, former president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), condoled the senior leader's death, saying that "with the death of Parkash Singh Badal, the era of politics in Punjab and the country has ended."

Meanwhile, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia has dropped his Phillaur tour midway following the news of the SAD patron's demise.

Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also took to Twitter to offer his condolences. "Saddened by the demise of S. Prakash Singh Badal ji. One of the tallest figures in Indian Politics who worked hard for the development of Punjab. His death is an irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace," he tweeted.

Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa expressed grief and said "Saddened to hear about passing away of Akali Dal Stalwart Prakash Singh Badal ji. My heartfelt condolences to @officeofssbadal , @HarsimratBadal_ May the departed soul rest in peace. His void will be difficult to fill in Punjab politics."
