Anandpur Sahib: The sacred city where the Khalsa was born | Safar-E-Shahadat – Part 1
PTC Web Desk: Anandpur Sahib holds a very special place in Sikh history. Its journey began in 1665, when Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji laid the foundation of the town. What was once a small village called Makhoval was purchased from the Rajput state of Bilaspur, then known as Kahlur.
The town was first named Chakk Nanaki, in honour of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji’s mother, Mata Nanaki Ji. Slowly, this small settlement grew into a vibrant town as devotees from Punjab and nearby regions began to visit. With Guru Sahib’s presence, Chakk Nanaki became an important centre of spirituality and faith.
In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the religious freedom of Kashmiri Pandits. He travelled to Delhi and attained martyrdom while standing firmly for justice and human rights.
During this period, Gobind Rai, the young son of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, grew up in Chakk Nanaki under the care of the devoted Sikh Bhai Jaita Ji. Known for his courage, wisdom, and royal presence, Gobind Rai earned respect from both Sikhs and neighbouring rulers. To protect the growing town, forts were built around Anandpur Sahib, strengthening it against possible attacks.
The most defining moment in the town’s history came on Vaisakhi in 1699, when Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa Panth. This historic event filled Sikhs with pride and spiritual strength, but it also alarmed the ruling powers. Soon after, a combined force laid siege to Anandpur Sahib.
Despite hunger, hardship, and attacks, the Sikhs showed unmatched bravery. Many achieved martyrdom, while others crossed the Sirsa river to safety. During this time, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s family was separated, each group facing immense trials with unwavering faith.
The story of Anandpur Sahib is one of sacrifice, courage, and spiritual strength. It stands as a powerful symbol of Sikh resilience and the birthplace of the Khalsa.
Stay tuned for the next part of Safar-E-Shahadat, as this remarkable journey continues.
